Welcome to Set Design I, the world of creating scenery for the stage. This is a very special class that combines fine arts projects, language arts skills and deductive reasoning. As with any art or design class, certain supplies and materials are needed to complete the art projects. Some of them you must bring from home, or buy, some the school will provide. You are responsible for collecting the following list of supplies and keeping them available for use in this room during each class.
In this art room, the tables have drawers in which you may store your supplies. If you use a drawer, you should purchase a padlock. You may also keep your supplies in a shoebox, or similarly sized box, brought from home, in our cabinet. If you share a drawer with your group, make sure everyone has a copy of the key or combination, or give the key/combination to me.

Art class, at times, can be messy. In order to
protect your good clothes,
You may want to cover up. You should bring in an
old shirt, smock or apron.
I know that you may decide that this art stuff is just not for you. If
that’s the case, I will buy any of these tools back from you if they are in
good condition and can be used by another student in the future. You may obtain
these supplies elsewhere if you wish.
I will have supplies for you to purchase next week.
You have 2 homework assignments from today.
For tomorrow or Friday: Draw a room in your home. Don’t work too hard on
this. Sit in a corner and simply draw what you see in front of you.
For Friday, 9/7: Write an autobiography of yourself. Describe yourself
and tell me what you like, dislike, how you spend your time, your hopes,
dreams, aspirations - and what you would like to be famous for. Tell me about
any negative aspects of yourself you feel would be important for a total
understanding of your character. This paper should be about 250 words long. All
written work MUST be typed.
Your grade
is based on a variety of factors: commitment to the responsibility given, quality
and completeness of design assignments, quality of presentations, proper
adherence to safety guidelines, class participation, promptness, crew hour
work, quizzes, exams and homework.
Work received after a due date will be marked down 5% for each day it is late. Projects that are sloppy or incomplete will be returned to be redone, or finished, and will be marked accordingly.
For details please see the handout: Grading
Policy For The Art Department.
Lateness is a problem! As is absences. Repeated lateness will result in a lower grade. Simply,
if you’re late too often, your grade will be lowered accordingly. If you have a conflict, I will gladly discuss
the problem. Please come to class prepared to work and always bring your art
supplies.
Extra Credit Crew Hours: In order to put to use the skills we learned during class, you are
encouraged to join “K-Band”. K-Band is the nickname for our technical
production class that occurs after J-Band. (Get it?) We meet in the scene shop,
room 184, everyday to work on the current show. Work could include building
sets, hanging lights, or whatever needs to get done. If you devote at least 30
hours during a single cycle, you are eligible to earn a grade. This grade will
be added to your transcript. If you earn this grade, it will act as an extra
credit assignment for this class as well.
Museum Report: We will be
designing a play called “Harvey” that is set in a Victorian Era mansion. The
museum has rooms and paintings that will help you research what a house from
the Victorian Era looks like. Details to follow.
Exams: As this class qualifies for the Art Studio
Credit required for graduation, we need to have some exams. The exam will be
based on our work in class and your homework assignments, including the museum
report.
Duration: This is a
TWO-CYCLE Course. Yes, we meet for two cycles. You will need to choose Stage
& Set Design II (ASD2) at course selection time.
