Welcome to the Lighting class. My name is Scott C. Parker. You will be working on several Murrow productions from the small plays in the Papp Theater to the big musicals in the main theater. Several of you are new to this class and others have taken it over a few years. You will all be working in teams of 4 or 5 per group. Some of you will find that you are more interested in the creative process and others will enjoy the technical side. Whichever you prefer, you will be very busy this year learning both. In addition to a sketch book and several #2 pencils, you will need an 8” adjustable wrench and a pair of leather work gloves. You may either bring these from home, buy them at a hardware store or you may purchase them from me.
We have several lockers available for storing your tools. You will need a lock. You must always have your supplies in class, or you will be marked unprepared. I know that you may decide that this lighting stuff is just not for you. If that’s the case, I will buy these tools back from you if they are in good condition and can be used by another student in the future. Your homework assignment for Monday, 9/10: Choose TWO: · Write an autobiography of yourself. Describe yourself and tell me what you like, dislike, how you spend your time, your hopes, dreams, aspirations - and what you would like to be famous for. Tell me about any negative aspects of yourself you feel would be important for a total understanding of your character. This paper should be about 250 words long. All written work MUST be typed. ·Make a detailed drawing of your favorite room. The sketch should contain various objects, each casting a shadow from some sort of light source. The shadows should tell me where the light source is. This drawing must be the best you can do. · Write about how your favorite part of theater makes you feel. What’s special about it? What do you hate about it? How does it effect your life outside of school? ·Answer this question, in depth: What would you like to learn about theatrical lighting? Design? Wiring? Lighting paperwork?
Work received after a due date will be marked down 5% for each day it is late. Projects that are sloppy or incomplete will be returned to be redone, or finished, and will be marked accordingly. For details please see the handout: Grading Policy For The Art Department. Lateness is a problem! (So are absences). Repeated lateness will result in a lower grade. Simply, if you’re late too often, your grade will be lowered accordingly. If you have a conflict, I will gladly discuss the problem. Please come to class prepared to work and always bring your art supplies. Extra Credit Crew Hours: Come join fellow students and make new friends. Join “K-Band.” K-Band is the nickname for our technical production class that occurs after J-Band. (Get it?) We meet in the scene shop, room 184, everyday to work on the current show. Work usually includes building sets, hanging lights, or whatever needs to get done. If you devote at least 30 hours during a single cycle, you are eligible to earn a grade. This grade will be added to your transcript. If you earn this grade, it will act as an extra credit assignment for this class as well. Talk
