Aim:

How to figure diagonal bracing for platforms

What will this lead to in his/her future?

Apply knowledge when we build &/or install raised platforms on stage

Why does s/he need this?

Being able to install proper diag. bracing to legs to support raised platforms.

What materials/supplies will the student need to supply?

paper & pencil

Safety glasses

What materials/supplies will the teacher need to supply?

pre made demo of non braced unit.

Hammers, nails, wood, tie line

What object/product shall the student end up with?

Diag braced 3 sided frame

Notes will include:

How legs support platforms.

How diag. bracing keeps legs upright.

how to figure length of diag bracing

Process, notes, outline, descriptions, script for teacher.

Set up small sample of "house of cards" using 1x3.

Show how easy it is for this to fall over.

Ask why

in groups, Have students build their own.

Ask them to create a device to keep it from collapsing.

Add tie line as diag. bracing. Then show how it stays up in one direction.

Ask why.

SHOW TRIANGLE FORMED

Ask how to keep from falling the other way. (looking for two answers here)

1) add second tie line from other side.

2) make diag. bracing stiff.

Add tie line the other direction.

If time allows. Otherwise, cover in the future.

How do we figure out how long the diag. bracing needs to be?

3,4,5 rule.

Relate this to future classes via…?

We have been, and will do more, placing diag. bracing on our platforms.
