Design is both an art and a craft. The aim of the graduate program in Design & Technical Theater is to assist the student in attaining the highest levels in these areas by offering professional training in scenic, costume, and/or lighting design, and in related subjects. The program consists, not only of the vital academic curriculum, where CADD is incorporated, but of intensive hands-on production work where what is learned in the classroom environment is applied to the real world of theater. Students design department productions (which include four Mainstage and up to six flexible theater productions each year). Advanced students are given the opportunity to design at other venues in New York City. Students are recommended for projects with professional designers and theater companies during the summer and, when possible, during the academic year with faculty approval.
The Department of Theater offers two undergraduate degrees, the BA degree in Theater, and the BFA degree. Each concentration is designed for a full four-year course of study that encompasses intensive classes in acting, design, and theater arts training. Students in both programs are required to enroll in Brooklyn College?s nationally known Core Curriculum as part of their studies in the liberal arts and sciences.
